Did you know that your eyes can get sunburned? Although sunburn of the eye is painful, it usually does not cause permanent damage. However, prolonged ultraviolet ray exposure can cause harm to your eyes as well as age them prematurely. Exposure to UV light over years increases your change of developing cataracts, certain eye cancers, and even lead to macular degeneration. When choosing sunglasses, the AOA recommends the lenses block more than 95 percent of UV-A and more than 99 percent of UV-B radiation. You can also have your prescription glasses made with tints and full ultraviolet protection. While most people wear sunglasses more for comfort or to reduce glare, always remember UV protection should be the most important reason to wear sunglasses.
